Etsy Fees Calculator for Austria Sellers

Austria applies a 20% standard VAT rate to Etsy's fees for sellers who haven't registered a VAT number (UID-Nummer) with Etsy — the same reverse-charge mechanic used across the EU. Once that UID is on file, Etsy stops adding VAT to the listing fee, transaction fee, payment processing fee, and any Offsite Ads charges, and the reporting obligation shifts to you instead. Currently there's no additional Austria-specific regulatory operating fee layered on top, which keeps the calculation comparatively simple next to markets like France or the UK.

What Austria sellers need to know

Austrian sellers running small operations often ask whether Kleinunternehmer status (the Austrian equivalent of the small-business VAT exemption) changes anything here — it doesn't, directly. Kleinunternehmer status governs whether you charge VAT to your own buyers; whether Etsy charges VAT on its fees to you is a completely separate registration with Etsy itself. It's entirely possible to be a Kleinunternehmer for your own sales and still be paying VAT on Etsy's fees simply because that separate registration step was never done.

The fee mechanics otherwise follow the EU-wide pattern: a small flat listing fee (charged in USD and converted to EUR at the prevailing rate), 6.5% transaction fee on the full order total including shipping, and a payment processing fee based on the seller's payment-account country rather than the buyer's location. If you opt into or are required to use Offsite Ads, that adds either 12% or 15% depending on your trailing twelve-month sales volume.

On the reporting side, Austria follows the same EU DAC7 threshold as every member state: cross 30 sales or €2,000 in a calendar year and Etsy reports your sales data to Austrian tax authorities. That's a reporting trigger, not an automatic tax bill — the two are worth keeping separate in your own head.

Try your own numbers in the calculator above and compare both VAT-registration states directly.

Worked examples

A €15 handmade item, domestic buyer, no VAT number

Revenue €18.50 → total fees €2.91 → Etsy payout €15.59 (15.7% effective fee rate).

A €60 order, EU buyer, VAT-registered

Revenue €60.00 → total fees €6.78 → Etsy payout €53.22 (11.3% effective fee rate).

A €12 digital download, buyer outside the EU, Offsite Ads active

Revenue €12.00 → total fees €4.26 → Etsy payout €7.74 (35.5% effective fee rate).

Frequently asked questions

Does Kleinunternehmer status affect VAT on Etsy fees?

No — that governs VAT you charge to your own buyers. VAT on Etsy's fees depends on whether you've separately registered a UID-Nummer (VAT ID) with Etsy.

What VAT rate does Etsy apply to fees in Austria?

20%, unless you have a VAT number registered with Etsy, in which case reverse charge removes it.

Is there an Austria-specific regulatory operating fee?

Not currently. Check VERIFICATION.md for the sourced figure.

How does DAC7 apply to Austrian sellers?

At 30 sales or €2,000 per calendar year, Etsy reports your data to Austrian tax authorities.
