Etsy Fees Calculator for Germany Sellers

German Etsy sellers face the same VAT reverse-charge mechanic as the rest of the EU, but with a twist that trips up more sellers here than anywhere else: the Kleinunternehmerregelung (small business regulation). If you're registered as a Kleinunternehmer, you don't charge VAT to your customers — but that's a separate question from whether Etsy charges VAT on its own fees to you. Etsy's fee-VAT depends specifically on whether you've provided a valid Umsatzsteuer-ID (VAT ID), not on your Kleinunternehmer status. Many German sellers conflate the two and end up paying VAT on fees they didn't need to.

What Germany sellers need to know

The underlying fee stack is standard: a flat listing fee (charged in USD, converted to EUR), a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total, and a payment processing fee with a percentage-plus-fixed-amount structure based on the seller's payment-account country. Buyer location does not select a higher processing tier. Germany currently carries no additional Etsy regulatory operating fee. At 19%, German VAT is also one of the lower standard rates in the launch markets we cover, which matters more than sellers expect once you're calculating fees on higher-ticket items.

Where this gets genuinely important for German sellers is DAC7. Etsy now reports seller data to the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern once you cross 30 sales or €2,000 in a calendar year — a threshold that catches many "just clearing out my craft supplies" sellers off guard every January when the reporting notices go out. Being reported is not the same as owing tax on personal items you're no longer using, but structural resellers and makers should treat it as a prompt to get their bookkeeping in order, not a bill.

Run your numbers through the calculator above with the VAT-registered toggle in both positions to see exactly what your Umsatzsteuer-ID is worth on your typical order size, and keep an eye on your total sales and revenue for the year if you're anywhere near the DAC7 threshold.

Worked examples

A €15 handmade item, domestic buyer, no VAT number

Revenue €18.50 → total fees €2.88 → Etsy payout €15.62 (15.6% effective fee rate).

A €60 order, EU buyer, VAT-registered

Revenue €60.00 → total fees €6.78 → Etsy payout €53.22 (11.3% effective fee rate).

A €12 digital download, buyer outside the EU, Offsite Ads active

Revenue €12.00 → total fees €4.21 → Etsy payout €7.79 (35.1% effective fee rate).

Frequently asked questions

Does Kleinunternehmer status mean Etsy won't charge VAT on my fees?

No — those are two separate things. Kleinunternehmer status affects whether you charge VAT to buyers. Whether Etsy charges VAT on its own fees to you depends on whether you've registered a valid Umsatzsteuer-ID with Etsy.

What is the standard VAT rate used for German Etsy fees?

19%, applied to Etsy's fees only when you have not registered a VAT ID (reverse charge applies once you have).

Is there a German Etsy regulatory operating fee?

Not currently, unlike France or the UK. See VERIFICATION.md for the sourced figure and date.

When does DAC7 reporting apply to German sellers?

Once you pass 30 sales or €2,000 in revenue on Etsy within a calendar year, Etsy is required to report your data to German tax authorities under DAC7.
