Etsy Fees Calculator for Netherlands Sellers

If you sell on Etsy from the Netherlands, the fee you actually pay depends on one setting most sellers never check: whether you have a BTW (VAT) number registered with Etsy. Without one, Dutch VAT is added on top of every single Etsy fee — the listing fee, the transaction fee, payment processing, all of it. With a valid VAT number, reverse charge kicks in and Etsy stops charging VAT on its fees entirely, because responsibility for reporting that VAT shifts to you. That single toggle can be worth several percentage points of your margin on every sale, which is exactly why it's the first question our calculator asks.

What Netherlands sellers need to know

Beyond VAT, Dutch Etsy sellers deal with the same layered fee structure as everyone else: a small flat listing fee per item, a percentage-based transaction fee on the total order value (price plus shipping), and a payment processing fee based on the seller's payment-account country. Buyer location does not select a higher processing tier. The Netherlands currently has no additional Etsy regulatory operating fee, unlike a handful of other European countries — one less line item to track.

Where Dutch sellers most often get surprised is at tax time, not at checkout. If you sell as a hobbyist under the Dutch kleineondernemersregeling (KOR), your VAT obligations look very different from a registered onderneming, and Etsy's DAC7 reporting means the Belastingdienst now automatically receives your sales data once you cross 30 sales or €2,000 in a year, regardless of whether you knew that threshold existed.

Use the calculator above with your own numbers, toggle VAT registration on and off, and see the difference for yourself before you price your next listing. If you're deciding whether to register for a VAT number in the first place, that's a decision worth making with an accountant — this tool shows you the fee impact, not the tax-filing implications of registering.

Worked examples

A €15 handmade item, domestic buyer, no VAT number

Revenue €18.50 → total fees €2.93 → Etsy payout €15.57 (15.8% effective fee rate).

A €60 order, EU buyer, VAT-registered

Revenue €60.00 → total fees €6.78 → Etsy payout €53.22 (11.3% effective fee rate).

A €12 digital download, buyer outside the EU, Offsite Ads active

Revenue €12.00 → total fees €4.28 → Etsy payout €7.72 (35.7% effective fee rate).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a VAT number to sell on Etsy from the Netherlands?

No — you can sell as a private individual or under the kleineondernemersregeling without one. But without a VAT number on file, Etsy will add Dutch VAT (21%) to its fees. This is a fee question, not a legal requirement to register.

Does the Netherlands have an Etsy regulatory operating fee?

Not currently — several other European countries (like France and the UK) do, but the Netherlands does not have this additional fee at the time of writing. Check VERIFICATION.md in our repo for the sourced, dated figure.

What is reverse charge and why does it lower my fees?

Reverse charge is an EU VAT mechanism where, instead of Etsy charging you VAT and remitting it, you self-report that VAT on your own return. Etsy simply doesn't add VAT to your fees when it applies, which is why sellers with a VAT number see lower total fees.

How does DAC7 affect Dutch Etsy sellers?

If you sell 30+ items or earn over €2,000 in a calendar year, Etsy is required to report your sales data to the Belastingdienst under the EU DAC7 directive. Being reported does not automatically mean you owe tax — those are two separate questions.
