Etsy Fees Calculator for Belgium Sellers

Belgian Etsy sellers sit in an interesting spot: a standard 21% VAT rate matching the Netherlands, EU-wide reverse charge rules that apply the moment you register a valid BTW/TVA number with Etsy, and — currently — no additional Belgian-specific regulatory operating fee the way France and a few other markets have. That makes the fee calculation itself relatively straightforward once you know the one thing that catches most Belgian sellers off guard: VAT on Etsy's fees is driven entirely by whether you've registered that BTW number with Etsy, not by whether you're operating under Belgium's small-business VAT exemption scheme (vrijstellingsregeling) for your own sales to customers.

What Belgium sellers need to know

Those are genuinely separate questions. You can be exempt from charging VAT to your buyers under the Belgian small-business scheme and still have Etsy add VAT to its own fees, simply because you haven't separately registered a VAT number with Etsy itself. Sellers who assume "I don't charge VAT, so Etsy shouldn't either" are often the ones overpaying without realizing it.

The rest of the fee stack is the EU standard: a flat per-listing fee converted from USD, a 6.5% transaction fee on your order total (item price plus shipping), and a payment processing fee based on the seller's payment-account country rather than the buyer's location. Offsite Ads, when applicable, adds either 12% or 15% depending on your sales volume over the past year, capped at $100 per attributed order.

For tax reporting, Belgium follows the same EU DAC7 threshold as every other member state — 30 sales or €2,000 in a calendar year triggers Etsy reporting your data to Belgian tax authorities. As with every country on this site, being reported and owing tax are two different questions.

Run your own numbers through the calculator above and toggle VAT registration to see the real difference on a typical order.

Worked examples

A €15 handmade item, domestic buyer, no VAT number

Revenue €18.50 → total fees €2.93 → Etsy payout €15.57 (15.8% effective fee rate).

A €60 order, EU buyer, VAT-registered

Revenue €60.00 → total fees €6.78 → Etsy payout €53.22 (11.3% effective fee rate).

A €12 digital download, buyer outside the EU, Offsite Ads active

Revenue €12.00 → total fees €4.28 → Etsy payout €7.72 (35.7% effective fee rate).

Frequently asked questions

Does the Belgian VAT exemption scheme mean Etsy won't charge VAT on fees?

No — Belgium's small-business VAT exemption for charging your own customers is separate from whether Etsy adds VAT to its fees, which depends on whether you've registered a VAT number with Etsy specifically.

What VAT rate applies to Etsy fees for Belgian sellers?

21%, the Belgian standard rate, applied when no VAT number is registered with Etsy (reverse charge removes it once you register one).

Is there a Belgium-specific Etsy regulatory operating fee?

Not currently. See VERIFICATION.md for the sourced, dated figure.

When does DAC7 reporting start for Belgian sellers?

At the EU-wide threshold of 30 sales or €2,000 in a calendar year — worth tracking your own totals as you approach either one.
