Etsy Purchase Protection for Sellers: The $250 Limit Explained
Etsy Purchase Protection can stop one lost or damaged parcel from wiping out the profit from several good orders. But it is not blanket insurance. Etsy decides whether an order qualifies, covers only part of a higher-value refund, and expects the seller to have followed specific shipping and customer-service steps.
The current rule is straightforward at the top level: for an eligible order, Etsy can cover up to $250 USD of the refund, or the converted equivalent in your local currency. If the refund is higher, the remaining amount is charged to the seller. Etsy says this expanded treatment also applies when the total order value is above $250.
That is useful protection, but the word eligible does most of the work.
What Etsy may cover
According to Etsy’s current Purchase Protection guidance for sellers, the programme may apply when:
- the buyer never receives the parcel;
- the item arrives at least 7 days after the estimated delivery window shown at checkout;
- the item arrives damaged, for the first damaged-item case in that calendar year; or
- the item matches the listing description and photos, but the buyer claims that it does not.
If Etsy accepts the case under Purchase Protection, Etsy refunds the buyer and the seller keeps the covered part of the sale proceeds. The programme starts only after the buyer has contacted the seller through a Help request and then opened a case for Etsy to review.
This is different from voluntarily refunding an order yourself. It is also different from carrier insurance. Etsy describes Purchase Protection as a programme it can apply after reviewing a case, not as a guarantee that every delivery problem will be paid from Etsy’s funds.
What the $250 limit means on a larger order
Suppose an eligible order requires a $430 refund. Etsy may cover the first $250. The other $180 remains the seller’s responsibility.
That example is intentionally in dollars because Etsy sets the programme limit in USD. For euro shops, Etsy refers to the converted local-currency equivalent rather than publishing one permanent euro ceiling. Exchange rates move, so treating $250 as a fixed €250 limit would be misleading.
For orders above the limit, Etsy recommends considering shipping insurance. Compare the insurance cost with the amount you would have to absorb if the parcel were lost or damaged. The Etsy fee calculator helps estimate the fee and profit side of the order, but it does not predict whether Etsy will approve a future protection claim.
The eligibility checklist
Etsy’s current checklist says an order should:
- be shipped within the processing time stated on the listing;
- have valid tracking or use a shipping label bought through Etsy;
- have an estimated delivery date with the required transit and origin information;
- arrive as described and match the listing photos;
- come from a shop in good standing that meets Etsy’s customer-service standards;
- receive a response to the buyer’s Help with Order message within 48 hours; and
- include duties and import fees upfront when shipping into the United States.
For damaged items, Etsy currently limits this part of the programme to the first qualifying instance in a calendar year. That makes careful packaging and evidence important even when earlier damaged-order claims were covered.
Tracking is especially easy to get wrong. Marking an order as dispatched is not necessarily the same as providing usable tracking evidence. Etsy says it may look at carrier scans as well as the information uploaded by the seller when deciding whether an order was sent on time.
Common reasons an order is not covered
An order can fall outside the programme when one of the eligibility requirements is missing, the item does not match its description, or the shop is not in good standing. Etsy also tells sellers with separate carrier, payment-provider or third-party insurance to submit a claim to that primary source first.
Customs can create another confusing case for EU sellers. Etsy says a delivery that is late or not received because the buyer delayed or refused to pay charges due on delivery does not qualify under Purchase Protection. That does not automatically make the seller responsible for a refund, but it is not handled as a normal protected late or lost parcel either.
Keep the case log factual. If Etsy asks for more information, respond within the deadline shown there. Save the dispatch receipt, tracking link, parcel weight, packaging photos and the final listing description. Those records are useful whether the claim is reviewed by Etsy, a carrier or an insurer.
Purchase Protection does not replace EU consumer rules
The programme decides who funds an eligible Etsy case. It does not erase the separate legal rights that may apply between a business seller and a consumer in the EU or UK. Those rights depend on the seller’s status, the item and the circumstances.
That distinction matters when reading advice online. “Etsy covered my refund” does not prove that every similar order will qualify, and “Etsy did not cover it” does not by itself settle the buyer’s legal rights. If you sell as a business, check the rules that apply in your country rather than treating a platform programme as your complete returns policy.
A practical routine before dispatch
For an ordinary order:
- Check that the processing time and estimated delivery date are realistic.
- Make the listing photos and condition notes specific enough to resolve a dispute.
- Use valid tracking where available and keep proof of acceptance by the carrier.
- Reply to Help with Order messages within 48 hours.
- For an order above the coverage limit, decide whether insurance is worth the uncovered risk.
When reconciling the financial side later, use our guide to reading an Etsy payout statement and the complete Etsy fee breakdown. Purchase Protection can change who pays a refund, but it does not change the fees originally charged on the order.
Source check: Etsy Help, 24 July 2026. The current rules apply to cases opened on or after 7 May 2026; Etsy directs older cases to the policy in force at that time.
General information only, not legal, financial or tax advice. Etsy can change or withdraw the programme and decides whether a transaction qualifies. Check the current Etsy Purchase Protection page before relying on it.
