Etsy Offsite Ads Fee: 12% or 15%, and When You Can Opt Out

An Etsy sale can come with an Offsite Ads fee even when you have never set a daily ad budget. That catches sellers out because Offsite Ads are not the same thing as Etsy Ads. Etsy Ads are the ads you choose and manage inside Etsy. Offsite Ads are ads Etsy places beyond its own marketplace, on search engines, social platforms and partner sites.

You only pay when an offsite ad leads to an attributed order. But the rate, and whether you can switch the programme off, depend on your shop’s sales history.

The difference between 12% and 15%

Etsy uses your shop’s sales in a rolling 365-day period to decide which rate applies:

Why are these amounts in dollars on an EU site? Etsy sets this rule in USD for every shop. If you sell in euros, Etsy converts each relevant sale to USD using the exchange rate it used when that sale was processed. You do not need to convert your sales yourself, but it does mean there is no single fixed euro amount that exactly matches the $10,000 threshold.

Shop sales history Offsite Ads status Fee on attributed orders
Always below $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period You can opt out 15%
Reached $10,000 or more in a consecutive 365-day period Required for the life of the shop 12%

The lower rate does not mean the programme becomes optional at higher sales. It is the other way round. Once a shop reaches the $10,000 threshold, Etsy requires it to participate and applies the 12% rate. If sales later drop below the threshold, the shop remains enrolled and keeps the 12% rate.

For shops that stay below the threshold, participation is optional. Etsy starts sellers enrolled, so you need to opt out yourself if you do not want Offsite Ads. There is no charge simply for being enrolled. The fee applies only when Etsy attributes an order to an Offsite Ad.

What counts towards the $10,000 threshold?

This is not necessarily the same number you see as your payout or total shop revenue in your own spreadsheet. Etsy checks sales on the first day of each month and looks back over the preceding 365 days.

For the threshold, Etsy calculates sales from item price multiplied by quantity, after discounts and excluding formally cancelled orders. Separately charged shipping, taxes, gift wrap, Etsy fees, Pattern orders and In Person Payment orders are excluded. If your shop currency is not USD, Etsy converts the relevant sales using the exchange rate it used when each sale was processed.

That is why a seller can be close to the threshold without their headline sales total matching $10,000 exactly. If you want to check where you stand, Etsy says you can use the Stats page in Shop Manager with a custom 365-day date range.

When does Etsy charge the fee?

An Offsite Ads fee is not a charge for every visitor who sees an ad. Etsy charges it when a buyer clicks an offsite ad featuring one of your listings and makes a purchase from your shop within 30 days.

One click can lead to more than one attributed order during that window. The buyer may purchase a different item from the one in the ad, or place another order later. That can feel surprising when you are looking at the payout, so check the Offsite Ads dashboard in Shop Manager before assuming a fee was added by mistake.

The fee applies to the order amount used by Etsy for the ad calculation. This includes your listing price, shipping and gift wrap, and may include applicable taxes in your listed prices. It is separate from your listing fee, transaction fee and payment processing fee. It can also sit alongside a Regulatory Operating Fee or VAT on Etsy’s seller fees where those apply.

The fee for one attributed order is capped at $100. That cap matters mainly on larger orders. On smaller orders, the percentage is usually the number that changes the margin.

Custom and bulk orders: check the fee before quoting

Custom work and bulk orders are easy places to underestimate this fee. You may set a price based on materials, labour and the size of the order, then discover that the buyer had clicked an Offsite Ad before asking for the quote. Etsy can attribute a purchase to that click even when the buyer orders a different item, provided the order is placed from your shop within the 30-day window.

Do not simply add 12% or 15% to every quote. Other percentage-based Etsy fees also change with the order value, and the Offsite Ads fee is capped at $100 per attributed order. Instead, enter the full quoted price, shipping, costs and your actual Offsite Ads rate in the Etsy fee calculator. Compare the result with and without Offsite Ads before confirming the price, especially when the order requires custom materials or a large amount of work.

How to opt out when you are eligible

You can opt out only if your shop has never reached $10,000 in sales in any consecutive 365-day period. If you are eligible, the steps are straightforward:

  1. Go to Shop Manager on Etsy.com.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Offsite Ads.
  4. Choose Opt out of Offsite Ads.
  5. Confirm the choice.

You can turn the programme back on later from the same page. Do not confuse this setting with Etsy Ads under the Marketing menu. Turning off Etsy Ads does not opt you out of Offsite Ads, and opting out of Offsite Ads does not pause an Etsy Ads campaign.

If the opt-out button is not available, the usual reason is that the shop has reached the threshold at some point. Etsy’s rule is based on whether the threshold was ever reached, not just whether your current month was strong.

Should you opt out below $10,000?

There is no universal answer. A sale you would not otherwise have received can still be worthwhile at 15%, especially if the order has a healthy margin. On a low-priced item, though, 15% on top of the rest of Etsy’s fees can remove most of what you expected to keep.

Before deciding, test a normal sale and an Offsite Ads sale in the calculator. If the Offsite version leaves too little, you might need to raise the price, sell a bundle or opt out while you still can. If it still works, the extra reach may be worth it. The numbers should decide, not the word “advertising”.

A lower-cost way to work on visibility

Offsite Ads are one way to get discovered, but they are not the only one. Improving your listing titles, tags and product research can keep bringing the right shoppers to your shop without an attributed-order fee on each sale. eRank helps Etsy sellers research keywords and competing listings, and is free to start.
